Infrared Tree

Infrared Tree
Originally uploaded by Alistair.

This infrared photo was taken years ago with my ancient Canon 35mm. I had seen some great infrared pictures in a photography magazine and thought "hey, I should try that out".

The quality wasn't what I was expecting, but the results were pretty impressive for a first go at it. I still have a few rolls of IR film, but the camera that I was using no longer works.

Many newer (ie: after 1984) cameras use infrared winders that will significantly fog the images. So, I am looking for a fully manual camera that I can use as my next outing with infrared exploration.

I particularly like this shot, with the main tree in the foreground standing as a representative of the other trees that fade away in the background. One of these days, I should print this (it's only a scanned negative right now).

Break a leg

That's exactly what my pup has done. While at the breeder's residence (he is there until I settle into my new home), an adult dog fell on him accidentally causing the little pup to fracture his back right leg.

Specifically: A transverse fracture of the radius, not including any joints or growth plates.

According to the vet, his prognosis is excellent with little chance of any post-injury problems. By the time he comes home with me, he'll be out of his splint and ready to go. I've already scheduled a visit to a local vet to ensure that any problems will be a figment of the pup's memory by the time he's 1.

Update
Great news! I received an email from the breeder yesterday:
"I am actually VERY tempted to remove that splint, I don't think he needs it at all.... He hasn't flinched or whimpered about it at all since about the 4th day after it happened."

Below are some pictures of him from just after getting the splint put on. Click each image to enlarge.

The only thing that stays constant...

In the next month, a lot of things are going to change for me, but two primary things leap out.

I'm moving for the first time in 7.5 years. For some people this isn't such a big deal, but I have lived in this apartment building longer than I have lived in any single location in my life. My father worked in an industry that moved him around quite a bit for the 12 years my parents were together. Later, while living with my mother, I found myself living in many different places while she looked for an affordable place to stay.

I'm excited about my new place: it's a fair sized 3-floor townhome, it's a short walk to work, and the current tenants even created a darkroom in the basement. It also has enough room for me and the other big change in my life... a puppy!

Just last night, I went to meet the young lad that will soon become a big part of my life! He's a 7-week old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (generally called a Toller) who is seriously cute!

I'll take him home for good once I have moved in. Until then, the breeder is taking him home to live amongst family.

I'll post pictures soon!
